Name to Chinese (nametochinese.com) is a free online tool for translators, editors, journalists and researchers, helping convert between foreign personal names, place names and their Chinese renderings.

Core features include foreign personal-name lookup (a general database plus dedicated libraries for Russian, Korean, Japanese, German, French, Spanish, Vietnamese and Arabic names), Taiwan standard renderings, place-name lookup, a transliteration engine built on 57 language tables, Chinese name to Hanyu Pinyin and Wade-Giles, simplified–traditional conversion, 37 naming-convention guides, and an institution and official-title glossary.

Renderings on this site follow publicly available transliteration standards and the conventions of each language — such as Xinhua transliteration standards and official or widely used transliteration tables — cross-checked against public data sources including Wikipedia. A rendering is an objective phonetic correspondence between a foreign name and Chinese.

We cross-check, align and structure data against multiple public sources, but do not guarantee the absolute accuracy of every individual rendering (see Disclaimer).

When choosing a Chinese rendering we apply this order: (1) the Chinese name used by the person or their government, such as the registered hanja name of a Korean or the Chinese characters behind a Vietnamese name; (2) established renderings from authoritative bodies and long-standing conventional forms, such as the Xinhua transliteration standards, or for Taiwan readers the forms approved by the National Academy for Educational Research; (3) only when neither exists, a transliteration based on the table for the person’s native language.

When a name is rendered differently across languages or regions, we list each form with the language or country it applies to rather than merging them into one "correct answer". Differences between mainland China and Taiwan are presented through a separate Taiwan standard-name database. Results produced automatically from transliteration tables are rule-based approximations and are labelled as such.

The name and notable-person databases are cleaned on an ongoing basis: entries that are not personal names (works, events, organisations) and duplicates are removed when found. The naming-convention articles are based on published linguistic sources and transliteration standards, and are revised when an error is confirmed.

To help us verify it, include the original name, the rendering currently shown on the site, your suggested rendering, and your source (for example an official document, the person’s own usage, or a link to an authoritative publication).

Every report is checked individually. Where the source is reliable we update the data or page and reply to let you know; where it cannot yet be verified we keep the existing rendering and explain why in our reply. When a name has more than one legitimate rendering, we add the new form with a note on where it is used rather than simply replacing the old one.

Renderings provided here are for reference only. The same foreign name may have several reasonable Chinese forms depending on context and source language; automatic transliteration is a rule-based approximation, not an official designation.
