道

Meaning of 道

道 (dào) is the Tao — the Way, the fundamental principle underlying all things. Laozi wrote: "The Tao that can be named is not the eternal Tao."

To say Tao in Chinese, pronounce 道 as Dào. The marks over the letters show the tones — the pitch contour that distinguishes Mandarin syllables.
